This 96-year-old Iraqi woman lives alone in Damascus, Syria, too fragile to care for herself. Her family was resettled to Europe but, due to her age, she was unable to make the journey. A neighboring Iraqi family, including the man pictured left, visits and cares for her daily.

Organize an Event

Interested in organizing an event to raise money and awareness for A Plate for All? Here are some suggestions:

1. Decide what kind of event you wish to hold. You can host a panel discussion with professors and local professionals in the global hunger field and/or the refugee aid/policy field focusing on topics such as global hunger, food security, the Iraqi refugee crisis, nutrition in emergency situations, etc. Alternatively you could host a movie night (showing the film: Our Feelings Took the Pictures: Open Shutters Iraq) followed by a short presentation about the work of A Plate for All. Book clubs, athletic competitions, concerts, dinners, walks/runs, and other creative events are excellent ways to raise funds.

2. Ask your company, club, organization or school if they will act as a financial administrator for donations. People can then donate cash at your event and your organization will send one check to A Plate for All for the entire amount raised. Alternatively, participants can donate online through the A Plate for All website using laptops provided at the event.

3. Register a space, time, and date to hold your event. College campuses, churches, and local pubs are good venues for this.

4. Contact Amelia Reese at areese@aplateforall.org with the details of your event, such as date, location, and fundraising goal.

5. Invite speakers, musicians and other performing groups to take part in the event.

6. Advertise your event by inviting local businesses, school departments, groups, teams and social organizations to participate. If you would like materials such as speaking points, photos, A Plate for All brochures and reports, please email info@aplateforall.org with the subject line: “Fundraising Materials Request.”

7. Contact local businesses to see if they will match the amount you raise. Make it a community-wide challenge!

8. Prepare what you want to say about A Plate for All to those taking part in your fundraiser. You can find our mission, activities, and quick facts about A Plate for All on our website. If you require more information please write to info@aplateforall.org with your requests.

9. When the event has concluded, please email Amelia Reese to let her know how your event went, as well as recommendations for other groups looking to organize an awareness/fundraising event.

All checks should be made payable to “A Plate for All" and mailed to:
